Let me take you to the Kandy shop

15 Augustus 2015 | Sri Lanka, Kandy
Nobody said we also would stop in Male, the Maldives, so I also got a glimpse of these islands.
Landing in Kandy was a little rough. The people in front of me had to puke. Luckily, I could refrain myself from this, but the smell of vomit and gasoline didn't help. Then the decided to spray bug-spray all over the plane... But I made it!
During my stay in Sri Lanka I will participate in a teaching project. This week was only an orientation week, in which we visited all kinds of temples in Kandy, where the project is based. I actually stay in a house a little outside Kandy, so we have to take public transport to the city.
Kandy is a very lively city. The town is centered around a giant lake, Kandylake. The major attraction in Kandy is the Temple of the Tooth, which is believed to contain Budddha's tooth. During my visit to this place there was a ceremony ongoing. Very interesting to see. I met this guy in the temple, who started to explain things about the temple to me. And he didn't even want money!
Later that day I met him again. I was just having a peaceful stroll around the lake when someone jumped me from behind. I thought I got mucked, but it was him. He kept giving me hi fives, and than he walked away.
During the orientation week they also take you to workshops and factories, hoping you'd buy something there. Me and my fellow volunteers skipped this and went to Dambulla and Sigirya instead. In Sigirya we climbed the giant rock in the middle of the city. To climb a rock in the blazing hot son is very tiring. But the view from the top of it made the climb much more bearable. Inside the rock you can see beautiful wall paintings.
In Dambulla we visited the rock temple. It's all in the name, a temple built around a rock. We had some more climbing to do, but again, it was worth it.
Next Wednesday I will start teaching. It will begin on Wednesday because of the elections on Monday and Tuesday. Also on the weekends you've got some spare time. This weekend I will be heading to the north of the country, to Jaffna, a Tamil and Hindu city. Keep you posted!
